DC Threads Sewing Lounge
Hello Friends of DC Threads,

As some of you have heard, DC Threads is about to undergo a major renovation. Our programs have been running for nearly five years, and we've started to feel it was time to revisit the scope of what we do and who we serve. We know there has been more demand for our programs than we have been able to meet (our sewing lounge spots fill in under 3 minutes once we post them!), but as a 100% volunteer-run initiative, we have always needed to work within the limits of our human resources.

After much thought, we have decided that we want to focus DC Threads on the community-service aspect of sewing, and also make the scope of our programs more specific so that we can better manage our events with the volunteers who so graciously lend their time. We are working on a complete list of activities for the year, but expect to offer a community service program monthly, beginning in April 2013. This means there will be no program in March while we finalize plans for the new model of DC Threads.

In its new form, DC Threads will still offer a free sewing tutorial available for first-time sewers at the start of the program, but we will be focusing each event's activities on a community service-related sewing project, such as making items needed by hospitals, homeless shelters, schools, or other local organizations. We are also looking at ways to improve the registration process so that it's not such a mad frenzy every month! A full list of activities will be coming soon, so be sure to keep an eye out for more details in the next couple of weeks.

For those of you who loved the DC Threads Sewing Lounge, yes, it will be gone in its present form. However, we are still exploring ways to keep the model of the lounge available in some capacity, most likely through a "community sewing club" of sorts at the Bits of Thread Sewing Studio. We are still evaluating possible models, but if you are interested in participating in or helping to organize a club, let us know.

We know these changes will be exciting to some and disappointing to others, but we hope you understand that DC Threads has always been a labor of love for us, and that we maintain our dedication to the mission of keeping the craft of sewing alive and well in DC. Please feel free to be in touch with any questions.

Allison and Laura
